Reading Time: 3 minutes

With the current unemployment rate in Northern Ireland at a new record low of just 1.9%, now more than ever, there is a light shone on the competition for talent experienced by local employers. Demand for skilled staff is ongoing and consistent with our latest analysis of job posting activity on NIJobs showing that hiring activity has increased by 9% in the second quarter of 2024.

With the local job market performing well, the insights from our bi-annual Jobseeker Snapshot survey couldn’t come at a better time. Our latest research into what jobseekers expect from employers informs the recruitment strategies of local businesses. Over 930 jobseekers participated in the research, which identifies a number of dealbreakers jobseekers tend to look out for during the recruitment process.

Our Jobseeker Snapshot survey also highlights the importance of a positive office environment, culture, flexibility, and salary expectations for NI jobseekers. This focuses attention on the need for employers to regularly assess their employment offerings, so they align with the evolving demands of local talent.

What jobseekers are looking for

Salary continues to be the most critical consideration for jobseekers when evaluating new job opportunities, with an overwhelming 72% of jobseekers researching average pay before even deciding to apply. Moreover, 60% of jobseekers are open to negotiating salary and benefits with potential employers, indicating a preference to ensure their compensation aligns with their expectations and market standards.

However, it’s not just about a paycheck; flexible working arrangements, which allow employees to manage their time more effectively were cited by 18% of respondents as a key consideration.

Job hunting pain points

Jobseekers face several challenges in today’s competitive job market, with the search for the right job being the most significant hurdle. By streamlining the application and interview process, providing clear job descriptions, and offering constructive feedback, employers can significantly reduce the frustration and difficulties jobseekers face.

By addressing these common challenges, employers can not only attract top talent but also promote a more positive perception of their brand in the job market.

Hybrid working; a priority for jobseekers

Hybrid and remote working options have become increasingly important to jobseekers in Northern Ireland, marking a significant shift in work-life expectations. Although remote working declined from a peak of 41% during the pandemic to 17% in 2023, hybrid working remains a key factor in attracting top talent.

Our survey shows that 84% of respondents are more likely to apply for positions with a clearly outlined hybrid working policy, with one-third expressing strong interest in such opportunities, highlighting that hybrid working is not just a preference by a decisive factor for jobseekers.

Jobseeker dealbreakers

Key dealbreakers included a negative impression during the interview (27%) and a poor experience during the hiring process (19%), meaning almost half of jobseekers (46%) would turn down an offer of employment if they weren’t happy with how they were treated by a recruiter. 14% of respondents also revealed they would reject a job offer if their employer’s products or services had a negative impact on society.

A further 12% of those questioned said that zero flexibility around remote or hybrid options would make them reconsider a job offer, with 60% preferring a mix of office and home working. The majority of respondents (66%) also indicated that they are allowed to choose the days they work in the office with their current employer.

In the rapidly evolving recruitment landscape, staying ahead requires more than just adapting to market trends – it demands a deep understanding of what jobseekers truly value. This ongoing assessment enables recruiters to align with the ever-changing preferences of candidates.

How your business is perceived plays a critical role in attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent who are not only skilled but also deeply invested in their careers and your organisation. As the recruitment landscape continues to shift, it’s essential for businesses to equip themselves with the right tools and insights to drive their growth.

By embracing change and actively listening to jobseekers’ insights, industries seeking skilled workers can enhance their recruitment processes, ultimately streamlining the hiring journey and securing the talent necessary for success.
