Job Title: Water & Waste Water Apprentice

Contract Type: Apprentice Contract, Full Time

Salary: 

Year 1 - £15,000

Year 2 - £17,500 - £20,313 (depending on age)

Year 3 - £20,000 - £20,313 (depending on age)

Year 4 - £23,183 (Class II grade)

Completion of Programme- £24,892 (HCO grade)

These increases will be subject to satisfactory performance and medical assessment, obtainment of driving license and completion of all relevant training/qualifications.

About the Role:

We currently have opportunities for self-motivated and enthusiastic Apprentices at seven locations across Northern Ireland, who are interested in making a difference to the Northern Ireland water industry and building a career with NI Water.

These Apprentice opportunities are available in the Water & Waste Water Production Line function within the Customer Services Delivery (CSD). The Water Production Line is responsible for the treatment and distribution of potable water supplying the customer with the water they need. The Waste Water Production Line is responsible for the provision of a high quality wastewater service, which contributes to the protection of the natural environment and complies with all regulatory and quality standards.

The Apprentice will work alongside the Water/Waste Water Technician to ensure that clean water is distributed and wastewater is removed in a safe and clean manner.

The four year NI Water Apprenticeship Programme is designed to ensure you gain real life, on the job experience and develop new skills and knowledge that will provide you with a platform from which you can build a successful career within NI Water. You will also enjoy being able to share your experiences and learn from other apprentices and colleagues.

Following completion of the Apprenticeship Programme, successful Apprentices will have the opportunity to move into the role of a Water or Waste Water Technician.

As part of the apprenticeship scheme NI Water will offer you:

  • A 4 year comprehensive training programme;

  • Completion of a Level 2 and 3 Water & Waste Water Operations;

  • Mandatory Health & Safety Training;

  • Other operational training;

  • Support via an experienced mentor;

  • Day to day work experience.


 Job Responsibilities:

  • Operation and maintenance of the water treatment works, water supply network, wastewater treatment works and wastewater pumping stations.

  • Address customer enquiries and complaints on the first call and record all actions.

  • Investigate and resolve issues on the water supply & waste water network to maintain supplies to customers as well as achieving good customer service and appropriate standards.

  • Report and resolve, where practical, treatment process and operating problems. This may include interrogation and drill-down analysis of computer control systems.

  • Responding to emergencies on the water supply & waste water network.

  • Carry out basic preventative maintenance and low level remedial work.

  • Test and record as necessary treatment and other parameters.

  • Undertake leakage detection activity using a range of techniques including acoustic sounding, correlation, step testing and water audits/analysis.

  • Use of modern technology and equipment in relation to water distribution, waste water and leakage management activities.

  • Use electronic work management systems to receive and record operational data

  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Management Systems.

  • Actively contribute to the effectiveness of the team.

  • Assist in meeting / exceeding contractual key performance areas.

  • Ensure all allocated work is completed on time and to the required standard.

  • Undertake any other duties as directed in connection with the Customer Services Directorate.


Following completion of the programme there will be a requirement for all apprentices to participate in an out of hour’s on-call and overtime rota as well as a requirement to work overtime; including weekends & public and privilege holidays.
