Positive Futures for people with a learning disability is a Northern Ireland charity that supports children, young people and adults with a learning disability. Positive Futures is a limited company registered in Northern Ireland.
Some people choose to focus on the disadvantages experienced by people with disabilities, but we concentrate on the potential that lies within us all. We know that positive things happen when an individual with a learning disability (no matter how severe the disability) receives the right type of support.
We see how people can grow in confidence, develop their skills, achieve remarkable goals, live much more independently and make positive contributions to their communities.
It’s our job to listen to people with a learning disability, their families and carers to make sure they’re fully involved in all decisions about their lives.
Most people with a learning disability wish to live in their own communities and our reputation is built upon developing, testing and establishing innovative, community-based services for Children & Families and for Adults.
When we look back to 1995, when Positive Futures began, we can see that much has improved for people with a learning disability. But we’re not saying that everything’s perfect or that we have all the answers. We know that appropriate services aren’t available to everyone and it’s clear that some people with a learning disability still face discrimination.
There’s still a lot to do before people with a learning disability gain an equal place in society, but we are working to achieve this aim and will continue to listen and develop new services to meet emerging needs.
