Granville Ecopark have recently opened a state of the art Anaerobic Digestion Facility near Dungannon. Developed by B9 Organic Energy the plant treats up to 60’000 tonnes per year of Biowastes to produce Renewable Electricity and digestate.
Anaerobic Digestion consists of the breakdown of organic material in the absence of oxygen to create a gas consisting of carbon dioxide and methane. This gas can be combusted in the production of renewable heat and electricity. The by-product is a digestate fertiliser which is high in nutrient value.
New Food Waste Regulations will be implemented from April 2015 which will ban all food waste from going to landfill and put a responsibility on businesses to have a food waste bin which can be treated at an AD Facility such as Granville Ecopark. Where food can be diverted from landfill into Anaerobic Digestion the estimated savings are 523kg CO2 per tonne.
The facility has been designed as a treatment facility for the above waste to be diverted from landfill into a source of renewable energy. The facility can produce up to 2.76 megawatts of Renewable Electricity per hour, the equivalent of powering 2,500 homes!
