Principle Consultant Peter McCready tells us more about his role at P2V Systems, an IT solutions provider based in Lisburn.
What do you do?
I am Principle Consultant at P2V Systems responsible for scoping, designing and overseeing the delivery of all projects for clients. I manage a team of technical consultants and liaise with clients, colleagues and partners to deliver IT projects. As a member of the senior management team, I help shape the company’s roadmap and strategy.
Describe your career path?
After I finished my degree in Computer Science, I began working for business processing and service provider Capita as a Team Leader and over several years progressed through a number of roles to Technical Design Authority.
In early 2014 I joined management consultancy firm PwC as a Senior Technology Consultant, to broaden my customer and market experience. I was part of the UK Data Centre and Cloud Solutions team and provided consultancy services to a number of leading global clients. This involved a lot of travel and work overseas and led to me looking for something a bit closer to home. The opportunity then came up with P2V Systems which provided a new challenge with a dynamic and growing business.
Describe your typical day?
At P2V Systems, our mantra in the office is that “every day is a school day”. We even have this written on the wall! We believe it is important to come to work expecting to learn something new each day. Although no two days are the same, I generally start my morning by catching up on emails and checking my diary for the day’s schedule. Then, I meet up with my team of consultants, ensuring our work is on target and evaluating our pipeline of work. Most afternoons can vary between meeting customers, potential clients and quoting for possible future work. I normally balance out my days with the delivery of tasks and managing any upcoming work we have in the pipeline.
What’s the best thing about your job?
It would have to be the variety of technology we get to work with and getting to see our solutions delivered and implemented. I love being involved in the customer journey, in every step of the way, and seeing a happy customer at the end makes it all the more worthwhile!
What’s the most challenging?
I would say that prioritising a busy workload can be challenging. Balancing customer requirements, managing a team and the day-to-day workload can be arduous, but I like to keep myself organised and on track.
What additional skills are needed in your role?
Apart from the obvious computing and technology nous, strong communication skills are essential. Whether chairing a meeting, or dealing with a customer or client face-to-face, good people skills go a long way. I’ve always found that maintaining a calm and composed presence is reassuring for a customer and I like to ensure my team follows this example. Keeping a cool head in a difficult situation has always stood me in good stead, too.
What advice would you give somebody applying for a job with your company?
Potential candidates would preferably possess a keen interest in the technology space that we specialise in. They should have a positive approach towards learning and personal development and be thorough in all aspects of their work. We also welcome applicants from all levels, from graduates to those with many years’ experience. Last but not least, they should keep the customer’s interests at the forefront – they are the most important part of the business.
