Who We Are:

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) is a Non-Departmental Public Body within the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI). It is responsible for the development, promotion and marketing of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination. NITB is the vehicle by which DETI aims to ensure that the huge potential of tourism is exploited in a sustainable way and has led the production of Tourism in Northern Ireland: A Strategic Framework for Action 2004-2007.

Our Aim:

The tourism market is becoming increasingly globally competitive. This highly competitive environment challenges the tourist industry in Northern Ireland to establish innovative and unique ‘selling’ points and to focus on the way it presents itself to the NI, ROI, GB and overseas markets. NITB therefore has a key role in providing the NI industry with ongoing support and best practice advice and guidance so as to enable them to compete internationally.

Our Plan:

NITB has identified the best opportunities for tourism growth through five Signature Projects namely Titanic, the Walled City, the Causeway Coastal Route, the Mournes and St Patrick/Christian Heritage. The importance of securing credible progress in delivering these five projects and achieving a long term brand position for Northern Ireland is at the heart of the future for tourism.

In total, income generated by tourism is worth some 3.5% of Gross Value Added, or £783 million to the Northern Ireland economy, and with Direct Added Value from tourism estimated at £423 million, this places tourism almost on a par with agriculture as one of Northern Ireland’s top industries. These figures are set to grow further as Northern Ireland is increasingly recognised by overseas visitors and those closer to home for its scenic beauty, rich heritage and warm welcome.
