Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States and Europe. The American Heart Association estimates that between 225,000 - 300,000 people die suddenly each year in the US from coronary heart disease, most before ever reaching a hospital. An estimated additional 350,000 - 750,000 patients annually experience a cardiac arrest and undergo attempted resuscitation during hospitalization. Traditionally this problem has been addressed by the use of paramedic ambulances with defibrillators on board. A new segment has emerged with the introduction of Public Access Defibrillators (PAD) strategically placed in places such as shopping malls, casinos, hotels, airports, stadiums etc.

HeartSine Technologies Inc (HST) was founded in 1997 for the purpose of developing a family of products focused on this new emerging growth segment of the medical device marketplace.

We established our R&D activities in Northern Ireland and initiated a formal collaboration with the University of Ulster's Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC) and its partner, the Royal Victoria (RVH) a local teaching hospital, to augment and enhance our in-house development activities. Since inception, we have been focused on developing leading edge, innovative technology components for use in the manufacture of a new generation of products, known as Automated External Defibrillators (AED), that will provide life saving therapy to victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) or heart attack.

The initial products were introduced into the market in 2002 and are now sold worldwide in over 60 countries.
