I have been working as secretary for the last five years. Pretty much since I left school. I did it cos I wanted to earn money, go out etc etc. I hated school and could n't face the thoughts of college. However, now I think I sold myself short. I am bored rigid and would like to change career (is being a secretary a career????) before it gets too late and I am too old or too financially committed to take a chance.

The thing is i don't know where to start? I am interested in the usual stuff bands, telly etc but there is nothing that really points me in any particular career direction. I only know I want to do SOMETHING NEW but I don't know what!

What should i do??????????????????????????????????????????????

sounds to me like you need to either talk to somebody who can help you tease out where you want to go. It is n't just a case of picking something you like the look of or sound of. Ok so you have drifted about but if you are serious about finding a new career you need to spend sometime making sure you make the right decision.

I don't think you need to go to a career coach, if you are honest with yourself and disciplined you can probably find all the questions you need to address online somewhere. If i were you i would be thinking about stuff like..

* do i like working on my own or with others
* What motivates me - money/status
* do i like my work structured or creative

etc etc etc

As I said you don't have to go to a career coach but he or she can take you through all these things in an ordered way and if they are any good you can do some psychometric testing so you can get an idea of your talents. Once you have all this information ONLY then you can start thinking about what work would suit you.

Once you have done that ALL you need to do is get the right qualifications and then try to get your foot in the door!!

It can be time consuming and just plain boring trawling through the internet trying to research all possible avenues. If you want to get the ball rolling I think a consultation with career guidance professional would clarify a lot of ideas you may already have and set you in a definite course of action. I was in a similar situation, it helped a lot.
